Kilimanjaro International Airport

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa’s highest peak and the world’s tallest freestanding mountain at 5,895 m
(19.340feet). Crowned with an everlasting snow-cap, this majestic mountain can certainly seem imposing
but not out of reach. We offer 3 different routes to suit every trekkers experience and fitness levels. You
can do it for the challenge, for the unique scenery, for the feeling of success, for the adrenaline and
accomplishments, but the sure thing is your life will change after you’ve dominated the highest free
standing mountain on Earth.

“KILIMANJARO MACHAME ROUTE”

Machame route, also known as the Whiskey route, has emerged in recent years as a popular choice for
trekkers, but also the most difficult. It is the route of choice for many people because it provides
spectacular views and a variety of habitats. The trail passes through cloud forests and moorland zones
to the glaciated precipices of Kibo’s south face and unlike Marangu trekkers descend via anther route a
steep but scenic path through dry mountain desert and lowland forest. This trek is geared towards
hikers that prefer a challenging hike.
We would recommend it to experienced climbers that have already been acclimatized before and
physically fit.

Itinerary

Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

We will pick you up at your hotel around 9:00am to deliver a short climbing info briefing and then departure to Kilimanjaro National Park’s entrance: Machame Gate (1,800m) where will start the hike.
Once the necessary formalities are completed, your hike through the dense rainforest can begin. Besides the impressive vegetation, you will have the opportunity to observe black and white colobus
monkeys, blue monkeys and various bird species. It will take you about 6 hours to reach your destination the Machamame Camp (3.010m) for dinner and overnight.

CAMP

– Machamame Camp

Hiking duration: 5 to 6 hours

After breakfast you will start trekking up to the second high-altitude camp, Shira Camp (3,845 m). On this day you will emerge from the rainforest and for the first time be able to see stunning views of the Shira Plateau laid out in front of you. Physically speaking, the trekking is not very difficult, but you may feel the changes in altitude, so pay attention to your body and remember that choosing the proper pace is extremely important for good trekking. Dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

CAMP
– Shira Camp

Hiking duration: 6 to 7 hours

After breakfast you will start your way to the key point of the route: Lava Tower (4,630 m). This section of the route has a lot of ascents and descents that end in a camp at over 4,600 meters. It might be difficult, and you may feel some discomfort, but in order to successfully acclimate to the altitude you have to spend at least 1-2 hours here, so this is where lunch will be. Then you will descend to Barranco Camp (3,960 m) where you will rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight.

CAMP
– Baranco Camp

Hiking duration: 4 to 5 hours

Early wakeup, breakfast and the start of summiting Barranco Wall (we recommend you leave the camp as early as possible to avoid crowds of the other groups). Hiking up the gorge wall is not difficult and only takes around an hour. After this starts a more difficult hike to Karanga Camp (4.035m) where you will be rewarded with a warm lunch, relaxation time, dinner and overnight.

CAMP
– Karanga Camp

Hiking duration: 3 to 4 hours

After breakfast you will start your way to Barafu Camp (4,640 m) where you will be able to admire the fantastic views of two volcanos at once: Kibo and Mawenzi. After lunch we suggest you to spend the remainder of the day resting and sleeping before night summiting.

CAMP
– Barafu Camp

Hiking duration: 10 to 12 hours

Your guide will wake you up before midnight for tea and biscuits to begin the summit attempt. You willreach Uhuru peak (5,895 m) on time for the best sunrise you will probably ever experienced in your life
time. After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Then you will return to Barafu Camp and after a two-hour rest continue your descent to Mweka Camp (3,080 m) for a well-deserved relaxation time, dinner and overnight.

CAMP
– Mweka Camp

Hiking duration: 4 to 5 hours

You will be offered a warm breakfast in the morning, after which we will head back to Kilimanjaro National Park’s exit: Mweka Gate (1,650 m) where the whole group will gather to congratulate. Lastly, we
will present you with your commemorative certificates and provide you a transfer back to your accommodation in Arusha.
